How to make an AI voiceover for free (UK beginner's guide)

You don't need a studio mic or acting lessons. AI voice tools can read a short script aloud in a natural-sounding UK voice – often for free. Here's a simple way to try it.

When you'd want a voiceover

Keep scripts short to start. Free plans usually have a monthly character or minute limit.

Steps on the ElevenLabs free plan

  1. Write a short script – one or two sentences is enough for a first try. Use UK English spelling and say names the way you want them pronounced.
  2. Open ElevenLabs and paste your script into the text box. Try ElevenLabs (affiliate link)
  3. Pick a natural UK-sounding voice – browse the voice library and listen to a few samples before you generate.
  4. Generate and download – play it back, tweak the script if a word sounds odd, then download the audio file to drop into CapCut, Canva, your phone's editor or your phone system.

The free plan is enough to test a social clip or a short greeting. Check ElevenLabs' current free allowance on their site before you rely on it for regular work. At the time of checking (18 October 2026), ElevenLabs' pricing page listed a commercial licence on its paid plans (from Starter upwards) rather than the free plan – so check the licence terms before using an AI voice in an advert, a product video or your business phone system.

Another option

If you want to compare tools, Murf is another AI voiceover product. At the time of checking (19 October 2026), Murf's Studio free plan was listed at $0 with no credit card, 10 minutes of voice generation and 10 projects – useful for a quick try. The free plan did not include downloads or commercial rights; Murf's help pages said commercial rights come with paid plans (Creator was listed from about $19 a month on yearly billing, or $29 month-to-month – prices in US dollars, so check pounds and VAT). If you need a voice for an advert, product video or phone greeting, start on free to hear the voices, then check the paid licence before you publish. Try Murf (affiliate link)
